Finding a Place to Stay - EM Strasbourg

Important tips to find an housing

  1. The sooner, the better! A lot of students (French or foreigners) look for an accommodation in Strasbourg. The sooner you begin your research the better. That will help you to have better options and higher chances to find a relevant accommodation according to your needs.
  2. Search on different websites: in addition to Ems’s preferred rentals (see below) and resources, search on specialized websites about accommodation rentals. You can also join social media groups, and talk around you with your French or foreign friends. Other students may look for flat-share or may have some good tips to share with you.
  3. Be careful of scams: unfortunately, rental scams on the internet exist. An ad for a very cheap accommodation, or which sounds too good to be true, should raise a red flag. Same for people asking you for money really soon, without even giving you pictures or a real time video of the accommodation. Don’t trust them too fast. If you have any doubts, please ask a trustworthy person..

Find a Guarantor

When applying to rent a place to live in France, a guarantor is often required. Your parents can act as guarantors.
If asking your parents is not an option, we recommend Visale, a free solution adapted to students.

What Is Visale?

A Visale rental deposit is an option for students who are looking to rent furnished or unfurnished accommodations from a private or public landlord. Visale increases students' chances of finding housing quickly and provides landlords with a guarantee that rent will be paid.

What about Garantme?

Garantme is similar to Visale but with it is a paid offer with additional services.

Buy Home Insurance

  • In France, it is mandatory to insure your home if you are a tenant (even at a university residence).
  • All tenants are liable for damage to property, including common areas of a building.
  • To purchase home insurance, students must open a French bank account.
  • Most home insurance policies also cover civil liability, which is also mandatory.
  • This insurance can be purchased at a French bank.
